Granville Island, Vancouver BC

Ali attends Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECUAD) which is located on Granville Island, basically under a huge bridge that connects one part of Vancouver to another.  Granville Island was originally two sandbars separated by some water and back in 1915 the city approved a reclamation project and dredged about a million cubic yards of fill from False Creek to create 35 acres that were used as industrial land for the forest, mining, construction and shipping industries.  Of course this displaced First Nations people that used the area for fishing and survival, but hey, even the Canadians are guilty of appropriating what wasn't theirs.  Like us.

I really like the corrugated style of buildings and bold colors.  ECUAD photos to follow.  Ali thinks having ECUAD located on a touristy island with no direct public transportation (he has to walk or skate from the mainland down to the island) is pretty lame.  Also, as a tourist area, things are very spendy - including the high rents that ECUAD has to pay to be on Granville.  As charming as the area is, I think I agree with him.
