Thank you, Kate!

Kate McKinnon always makes me smile.  Or this case, move.  I love her juxtaposition of ideas. This post is about a melange of things... the Olympics, Romney's tone deafness, and words.  I'll let you go to her elegant website to see how she put it all together, but just for pure joy I'm re-posting one of the videos she put up.

I can't believe this song came out in 1986 - one year after Lina was born.  I love their sound, their clothing and their moves.

Gave me goosebumps...

The Thunderbirds are in town for an air show at Joint Base Lewis McChord this weekend. Seriously badass.

Reflectionpass

I wasn't going to go out to see them, but was lucky enough to see them flexing their wings in rehearsal.  Talk about LOUD.

Deltaburst

No matter what jokes the Army makes about the Air Force ("Air Force?  They're just our taxi service") seeing $20 million bucks' worth of airplane flying over is impressive.  One F16 = $20M. I can verify that there's at least six of them - do the math.

Thunderbirds

Regardless of what you think of the cost, the implications, the morality of war, you still have to be awestruck by such an amazing piece of machinery and the brave pilots that operate them.  In whatever formation.

Makes me want to see "Top Gun" again.

The best part is the beginning when you get to see the orchestrated movements of the flight crews.  The editing on the intro is terrific.  If you drive north on the Sound, you can see some of the massive hulking aircraft carriers in dry dock at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

Is it April Fool's Day?

Yeah, I listen to Dr. Laura.  Sue me.  Remember, it's important to listen to people you fundamentally disagree with - it lets you know, in the rawest form, what the other side is thinking.  Assuming you can call it thinking.  Sometimes she makes sense.  Usually she sharpens my liberal focus by saying something idiotic.

Wow
She has recently launched her Very Own Website To Sell Her Artistic Efforts.

Ugly_salt_and_pepper_shakers

Here's the conundrum:  I don't know what is worse - luring unsuspecting folks into buying her crap because she's "famous" or the horrendously high prices she charges for this nonsense or that it's pretty evident from what's on her website that she has absolutely NO TASTE WHATSOEVER.

My kid's elementary school projects were better conceived and executed.  Strike that, their pre-school projects were better conceived and executed.

Cruise around her website for just a few minutes and you'll think you've slipped into some kind of Bizarro World alternate universe.  Can you imagine the Christmas office party at her show?  "Gee, really, Dr. Laura you shouldn't have - a Limited Edition Slumped Booze Bottle Serving Trays For The Men In Your Life with spoon included!?"

Oh, and the Google today is lovely...

Klimt.  The Google header.

See how much I love you, Posterous?  Two posts in one day.

I know we can make this work.

I have a confession to make...

It's not just that I have been busy.

And not that I don't love you Posterous, I do, I truly do.

But I have been cheating on you with that sultry temptress, Facebook.  I know, I know.  I even did a rant a while back on it.

I have succumbed to the Borg, all seeing, all knowing.  "Resistance is Futile."

Picard

I don't have a point-and-shoot right now (mine is BUSTED and in snail mail hell somewhere) and I caved in and was seduced by that vixen, Instagram.  I joined in early January this year, but didn't use it much.  Seemed kinda pointless.  But then Facecrack bought Instagram in April, and boy howdy did that change up my game.

So if you know, is it still cheating?  If I give you the link to my page and you can see that it's all harmless fun will you trust me again?

If I promise to post at least once a week, will you forgive me?

Birthday skate shesh at Horseshoe Bay

Ali in his element....

Ali_in_his_element

...with Matt, Dan, and Eric.  Dan is schoolin' them about something.  ;)

Dan_schoolin_the_boys

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Ali skate in a long time so this was a treat.  I love watching him drop in, creating interesting shadows.
Ali_air
At some point a competition erupted to see who could stay on their board the longest going around the bowl in a circle.  Up first, Dan.

Then Matt.  He ended up bowl-side, on the ground.

Ditto Eric.

Ali went last, going the other 'way round the bowl since he's goofy-footed.  He had the top score, with 17 rounds.  I think the boys let him win, for his birthday.

Even with a win under his belt, the genetic Schloesser klutziness periodically rears it's head...

And when you're tired of skating, there's always a fencing match with skateboards on a teeter-totter...

I don't want to embarass the members of Team MimZ, but here I go anyway.  These guys are so good hearted and sweet - sorry to blow your cover!!

Brunch with friends

Shockingly, they are all beautiful, captivating, and fun.  I'm happy that Ali has so many good friends. It was interesting to meet everyone; all y'all!

David Roth always looks so dissolute, but he's a great photographer.  The iconic David of the Bigir story is also responsible for documenting the Easy Rider shoot.  (Apologies to all for being so meta.)

He took one of my favorite photos of Ali and Matt.  Matt with long hair.

Now, Matt with NO hair and the lovely Lys next to him.  Matt, I MEANT what I said about the hair.

Pussycat, pussycat, where have you been?

I've been to London to visit the Queen.

Pussycat, pussycat, what did you there?

I frightened a little mouse under her chair.

Mumsy used to recite this nursery rhyme to us.  However, I wasn't in London, I was in Vancouver for Ali's birthday.

Interwebs, the Boy is 20.  I KNOW, right?!

...to this great big guy going off to work at his internship at Color Magazine.  As it says in the masthead:  SKATE / MUSIC / ART / FILM / LIFE / FASHION / PRINT.  It is the most beautiful skate mag I have ever seen, and I thought that BEFORE Ali worked there.

This is a dream come true for him, I and I couldn't be more proud.

Love you.

Mad Men. And why it matters.

I resisted watching Mad Men.  Why?

Because it was so obviously about what really was going on then, in the 50's and 60's. That it was too painful to be confronted with what the reality was at that time.  That women were on the cusp of a Massive Change. That bold women went from being grateful to work at all to being desirous of Having More and be treated as Equals.

It was what my parents faced.  That Pops (in a psychiatric residency at the famous Menninger Clinic) was criticized for have a Wife That Worked.  "What is wrong with you?  You can't support your wife and children?  Can't you keep her at home in an apron, tending the home fires?"

How bold and brave they were, in the 50's, bucking the trend, being ahead of the curve.  How gracious and generous my father was to "let" his wife be a public health physician and pursue her dream of making life better for women and children.  They were so far ahead of what society was at that time - they envisioned a world where men and women were partners in contributing to making the world a better place.

Their choices were hard.  And the result of making those brave choices, so out of line with the culture, had a ripple effect in the lives of their children.  Growing up, my siblings and I experienced a world in which women and men were peers and each had a contribution to make.  Our role model was one of an equal partnership between men and women.

This was a high bar that was set. We were given a new modality and we all made it work in our own way.  We also were trailblazers - looking back on our lives I can see the boon and the difficulty inherent in their gift.

I think that the ecosystem they demonstrated to us had to process through our generation. That the real test of their experimentation in this brave new world would only manifest in the next generation, in our children.

Lina and Ali - I am not passing a burden on to you.  I'm just asking you to consider the inroads that your grandparents made into the zeitgeist of their time by following their hearts in what they thought was right.  Honor them by doing the same.

Lovely dear friends

Jane and Len were in Seattle over the weekend a few weeks ago to see the Gauguin exhibit and came down to Tacoma to visit me in the Dollhouse.  We had a nice lunch and then we went on a drive through Point Defiance park.

Point_defiance

In addition to the beautiful flowers they brought me from Pike Place Market...

Flowers

They gave me another gift........one of perception.  Jane and Len's comment about where I live opened my eyes.  They said that it reminded them of a beach community, like Cape Cod.  It never occurred to me!!  I just thought it was a bit shabby.  Isn't it amazing how someone else's perception can change your point of view?  I always wanted to live in a beach community, and I am and I didn't know it!
Dollhouse_view

I was so excited to see them that I forgot to take photos.  So here's one from when I first met Jane and Len, when our babies were new to the world.  Back in London.  Michael was born six weeks before Lina was.  Aren't we adorable?

Lina_and_michael

We found each other again through the wonder of the interwebs and they have been such a comfort to me, looking after my little chicken Ali who is attending university in Vancouver.

Dim_sum

They graciously welcomed Lina and Ali into their beautiful home when they didn't really even know us... except from 25 years ago in London.  When I visit them, I feel like I'm at a wonderful spa...

They fed and housed my children whilst Lina and Ali were looking for a place for Ali to live - no dorms in Canadia!

Dinner

Their son Michael is now engaged to his beloved, Laura, who he proposed to in Whistler.

Here's how Michael looks now...

And here's Lina and me at Sea Tac airport, at Christmas.

Jane and Len - I'm so glad we found each other again.  You both have enriched my life.
